It all began when I went to the Wildflower Pilgrimage at Cedars of Lebanon for extra credit. Little did I know that this "grade" would affect me for the rest of my life. It was here that I met Ruth McMillan. Her offer of allowing me to hunt flowers on her & her husband Mac's land was our first beginning to a long and lasting friendship. That following summer, when I was a seasonal at the park, she'd be on my porch early in the morning ready to go birding on my days off. When my husband, Roy, was first birding, I had to introduce him to Ruth & Mac, her husband. He was so impressed at first meeting. If Ruth wanted to stop & see flickers "feeding among the robins," there were.if she suggested we stop and look for the black & white warbler at a certain picnic area, it was there. This was his first introduction to my mentor & wonderful birding companion and friend. Ruth was a longtime member of TOS. A member of the Murfreesboro Chapter and later the John Sellars Chapter of TOS in Lebanon. She was one of the best. One of the very best. During my Spring Break in college, she & I would bird somewhere. Her generosity, along with Mac's, always allowed me to have this treat. It was Ruth McMillan who probably first alerted us to the lark sparrows in the area and sightings of scissor-tailed flycatchers. There wasn't much that would slip by Ruth in the beautiful outdoors. She had such a vast knowledge and appreciation of it all. The birding world lost a treasure Sunday. She'll never know how much of an impact she made on my life. Her encouragement, patience, teaching, and passion for birds and flowers will never be matched. Perhaps, though, if I continue in these endeavors, it would make her pleased. After all, to know Ruth is to know and love birds and flowers. I loved my wonderful friend, Ruth V. McMillan. Birds and flowers will be forever part of me because of Ruth. Coneflowers and lark sparrows will keep coming back to let us know Ruth is forever with us.
