Most years in March I stop by Seqouyah Park in Knoxville (Knox County) to view the Great Blue Heron rookery across the water on Looney Island. I did that this morning but the only Great Blue Heron I saw was nowhere near Looney Island; it was flying over Cherokee Blvd. Normally on this date there would be dozens of Great Blues flying around, fishing and standing on nests. There were very few nests to be seen and these were unoccupied. I didn't make it there in 2010 and I wonder if anyone knows if they used the heronry last season. The two osprey were back at the nest on the platform at the tip of the island. Curious, when I left there I went to Marine Park on Alcoa Highway to look at Looney Island from the other side and came up empty there too.
