July 19, 2007 Hornbeak, Obion County It was interesting reading about Jeff Wilson's viewing a Mississippi Kite t= ake a Chimney Swift out of the air last week as 100 miles north I also view= ed some interesing kite behavior. I was working in Hornbeak in Obion Couty = when I noticed a Mississippi Kite flying low over the trees. It disappeared= into a large pecan tree and then reappeared a few minuted later. As I watc= hed the kite I noticed a Ruby-throated Hummingbird fly across an open area = between some trees. Immediately the kite took notice and went into a dive a= fter the hummingbird. It missed and the hummer flew through another pecan t= ree and came out on the other side. When it came clear of the tree the kite= made another pass at the hummer and the hummer made an evasive move and di= sappeared into a nearby thicket. The kite casually circled off and out od s= ight. This was the first time that I have ever seen a kite pursue another b= ird in flight but come to think of it a hummingbird isn't much larger than = a dragonfly or a cicada and they are both regular prey items for Mississipp= i Kites. I felt very lucky to have been in the right spot to witness this e= ncounter.
