From a TN-Bird January 2001 message posted by Betty Garmon of Decatur, AL, was
the following recipe for making suet. I have used this recipe with great
success (as I type this, a Red-bellied Woodpecker is eating suet from the top
of my suet basket while a Tufted Titmouse is hanging upside down at the bottom
of the basket feeding on the same cake of suet). It is an easy recipe to
follow -- even I can follow it and get consistent results. Try it -- your yard
birds will enjoy it.

MARTHA SARGENT'S SUET RECIPE (from TN-Birds, January 31, 2001)

1 Cup Crunchy Peanut Butter
1 Cup Lard
2 Cups Quick Cook Oats
1 Cup White Flour
2 Cups Cornmeal
1/3 Cup Sugar

Directions: Melt lard and peanut butter in the microwave or over low heat.
Stir in remaining ingredients and pour into square freezer containers about
1-1/2" thick to fit your suet basket. Store in freezer or refrigerator until
needed. Makes about 8 cakes.

Hints: I microwave the p'butter and lard in a large mixing bowl -- it only
takes a few seconds. Then stir in everything else and spread it into the
bottom of a baking dish. Chill in the freezer until it "sets" up; cut into
squares to fit your suet basket; store in plastic container in freezer.
