This morning around 10 am a raptor flew across the road in front of my car as I
traveled south from Corby Bridge nearing the intersection with Wilholt Rd. (Old
Jonesboro Rd. in Delormes Gazeteer) It looked like a small falcon (I had just
been watching a Kestrel hover nearby) but it was flying only 2 to 3 ft above
the ground as it crossed the open fields. I quickly glassed it and when I saw
the slaty blue back and slate and black barred tail with no rufous anywhere I
realized it was a Merlin. As it disappeared over the rise, a flock of Kildeers
flew up ahead of it and left the area, followed shortly by a flock of Pipits.
