TN-birders,
Dollyann and I decided to check out Eagle Bend fish hatchery, on the east side
of Clinton in Anderson County, in advance of a field trip that I am leading
there tomorrow morning at 8 am. A weather front passed through today and we
thought it might bring in some unusual birds. Our thoughts were mostly along
the lines of water birds because that's what we mostly find there, but today we
were surprised by a wave of warblers in the shrubbery along the Clinch River.
We managed to find 10 species of warblers in a short time. That 10 included a
female Wilson's Warbler (seen briefly by me) and an Orange-crowned Warbler
(seen briefly by Dollyann). We had multiple Palm and Tennessee warblers as
well.

Other evidence of the migration was a group of 6 Turkey Vulture riding a
thermal, 40+ Chimney Swifts feeding over the ponds, 4 Tree Swallows and a
single Northern Rough-winged swallow, a Green-winged Teal we had seen there a
few days ago for the first time this fall, and finally a female Northern
Pintail (the first record for me at Eagle Bend since 2004). Icing on the cake
was an adult Cooper's Hawk.

The first fall American Coot showed up earlier this week and today there were
3. there are also a couple of Pied-billed Grebes around.

Great Birding,

Ron Hoff and Dollyann Myers
Clinton, TN
