Season first for myself in our South Nashville yard this morning was a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER (10/5). Yesterday I had a bit of a surprise (fairly late?) YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, along with a few expected warbler species flitting around the insect-overabundant hackberry trees. Also yesterday at Phase 1 of Shelby Bottoms Park I flushed seven BLUE-WINGED TEAL from a wet ditch in the field west of the lookout structure (south of the large pond) while looking for marsh and/or sedge wrens; no luck with the wrens, but heard a fair number of "tschat" calls from COMMON YELLOWTHROATS.
