Some recent activity of note in the mid-state area: A pair of Cooper's Hawks have built a nest in a Hackberry tree in the yard behind me in South Nashville. My neighbor observed the start of nest-building about 3 weeks ago. Over the last couple of days the pair were flying together around the yard and tree but not attending the nest itself, so no apparent egg-laying yet. A Cooper's Hawk has been around the area for quite a few years, but this is the first nest I've seen. In Marilyn Burgess's yard in Dickson, a pair of Red-shouldered hawks are nesting, and brooding small chicks, as down feathers are evident in the nest, high in a Black Gum tree. This is most likely the pair which have nested for at least the last 3 years in the yard across the street, where nest blew down this winter. After a hiatus of 2 years, an Eastern Phoebe has built a nest atop her front porch light. Today, at my property in Macon County, after a similar hiatus, a Phoebe has built a nest on the cabin porch, which contained a single egg. Another bird seen today after a gap of a couple of years was a Louisiana Waterthrush, flying and bobbing and occasionally chipping, along the stream where it is probably nesting. A Yellow-throated Warbler was also heard. John Froeschauer Nashville
