It's getting on towards the middle of October, and so far I have found exactly one White-throated Sparrow and zero Swamp Sparrows here in Lewis County -- and the single White-throat was just yesterday. Normally by now both species would be numerous. I checked some eBird maps for the White-throats, and indeed they have been very late in their southward push across their range, not just here. I've attached screen grabs of the range maps for September 2000-2012 and for September 2013. Note that what appears to be a shortage of birds on the northern parts of the range in 2013 is actually a shortage of data; this is caused by looking at a single year rather than 13 years pooled. The areas shaded with gray represent valid negative data (complete checklists submitted but no White-throats observed). The unshaded areas represent regions with no data. By the end of October they have usually pushed through to the Gulf Coast; it will be very interesting to see what happens this year, as they are just now getting to the places they typically reach 2 weeks earlier in the season.
