June 9, 2009 Shelby Farms/Agricenter Memphis Shelby County At 11:30 today I observed at least 59 Mississippi Kites feeding over the ag fields and tree lines along Farm Rd., in Shelby Farms, between the bison fields near Walnut Grove Rd. and the cluster of buildings near the Humane Society building, where Farm Rd. ends at Mullins Station?Rd.?They were not in a kettle, but were strung out loosely over the treetops and open fields. After finding a place to pull off the road and getting out my binoculars, I could tell there were more in the distance beyond the trees. A single Black Vulture?soared very high up and one Red-tailed Hawk floated between it and the kites. By the time I had made my visit to the hazardous waste drop-off and gotten back out to Farm Rd., only a few minutes later, the birds had dispersed somewhat, though?I could still see many over the trees north and west of Farm Rd.
