I spent a couple of hours (Sun 3/17/02) this morning at the Blue Blazes trail, Mocassin Bend, Hamilton Co. Waterfowl were the highlights. I saw 3 pair of WOOD DUCKs in the swamp. I knew it was good habitat and have been hoping to see them there. The colors on the male were beautiful! I had 3 (2 male, 1 female)BUFFLEHEAD on the river. Less exciting, 6 pair of Mallards in the swamp. On Thursday I had a pair of HOODED MERGANSERS in the swamp, and on Monday I had a pair of COOTs in the river. Today the TOWHEES were very vocal and visible. Also present today: Great Blue Heron Buteo sp. Mourning Dove Downy Wo Red-bellied Wo E Phoebe Am Crow Blue Jay Ca Chickadee (out in force today) Titmouse Brown Creeper Carolina Wren Kinglet sp. Am Robin Brown Thrasher Cedar Waxwing No Cardinal Field Sparrow Song Sparrow White-throated Sparrow Starling MISSING: Hermit Thrush (I haven't seen them all week. I don't know if they're hiding well or have headed north) No Flicker (they've been out in force the rest of the week) Also saw Henbit and Cutleaf Henbit in bloom, and my first tree snail of the spring.
