While I totally agree with Ms. Cardenas' concerns, for those of us
that
are less conscientious keep in mind that the life cycle of a mosquito
from
egg to larva to pupa to adult rarely takes less than two weeks (W.
Linsenmaier, Insects of the World). Therefore a weekly cleaning of the
bird
bath should be sufficient to prevent mosquito propagation, though you
may
want to clean more frequently for the sake of the birds.
Also, it is worth noting that mosquitos rarely breed in running
water,
so fountains and artiticial streams with pumps generally are not a
concern.
More troubling are the LITTLE containers, like outside trays of water
underneath plants, or an empty can, plastic pot, watering can, old tire,
mud
puddle, etc. Rooftop gutters clogged with leaves that create puddles
are
also notorious breeding places.
