TN-birders, Jeff brought up a very good point with the Mottled Duck that he recently found in Memphis for a 1st-state record. This bird was very dark, very likely from the western race 'maculosa'. Jeff came out with some fantastic photos of the bird, especially considering the conditions he was working with. People that are familiar with the nominate race from Florida and the eastern gulf coast could very easily overlook this bird from a distance due to its darkness. The eastern birds (which I have slight experience with in FL and AL) remind me more of a female Mallard, while the TX birds (which I also have slight experience with) tend to be closer in overall color to a Black Duck. Most field guides, especially the old classics, don't show Mottled anywhere near as dark as these western birds get. For anyone wanting to explore this further, in addition to Jeff's shots he has posted, I ran across a series of excellent shots of the 1st record Mottled from North Dakota earlier this year. These shots, along with Jeff's, give a great look at Mottled Ducks. The link is: http://www.geocities.com/grandcitiesbirdclub/ImageIndexPage.html . I have also added a shot of a couple of dark Mottled's from TX on my website, this is with the shot of the Memphis bird in the "Uncommon to rare local birds (vol. 3)" album at: http://home.bellsouth.net/p/s/community.dll?ep=16&ext=1&groupid=116215&c k Good birding, and I hope this bird allows a few others to see it while it visits the Volunteer State!
