An excellent wetland birding site has opened this year virtually in downtown
Murfreesboro! In 1986, Billie Little with the help of her husband Joe, a
local pediatrician, managed to open The Children's Discovery House, a hands on
museum, in a old house, one block off the town square. Several years ago, they
started expansion into a new site on SE Broad St that was occupied by the old
Coca Cola bottling plant. Behind the plant was an extensive wetland that
originated with the water flowing out of Murfree Spring. The museum is now open
in
a beautiful new building, and a nature area in the back includes a wonderful
boardwalk and paved trail complex that was dedicated this May. The area
encompasses 20 acres, and will undoubtedly attract a large variety of migrant
and
breeding birds as well. In the center of the marsh, the WGNS radio station
antenna soars several hundred feet into the air. Seen this morning were a
Marsh
Wren and a Lincoln's Sparrow, both uncommon in this area. Access is limited to
daylight hours only, any donations to the museum would be welcome! The area
is a few blocks past the junction of US 231 (Church St) and US41 (SE Broad)
heading SE toward Manchester.
