Old Hickory Lake:
Today several members of the Nashville TOS chapter
attended a field trip to Old Hickory Lake led by Gary
Casey. We birded several sites around the lake,
including Snow Bunting Pennisula, and the areas just
above and below the dam.
Notable birds included:
COMMON LOON
PIED-BILLED GREBE
HORNED GREBE
DOUBLE CRESTED CORMORANT
GREAT BLUE HERON
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON
MALLARD
LESSER SCAUP
BUFFLEHEAD
HOODED MERGANSER
RUDDY DUCK
COOPER'S HAWK
AMERICAN COOT
KILLDEER
BONAPARTE'S GULL (1 SEEN)
RING-BILLED GULL
HERRING GULL (3 SEEN)
BELTED KINGFISHER
BROWN CREEPER
GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET
HERMIT THRUSH
EASTERN BLUEBIRD
PIPIT (Heard flying over)
YELLOW RUMPED WARBLER
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW

After the field trip, John Mann, Rob Lane and I headed
out to the Britton Ford section of the Tennessee
Wildlife Refuge to look for the Red Phalarope
previously reported. On our way, we stopped by Paris
Landing State Park (near Dover TN) where a LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL had been reported. We found it as
well as AMERICAN BLACK DUCK.

We then went to Britton Ford, where we found the RED
PHALAROPE in the same location as previously posted.
Initially it was seen on the water and then feeding on
the mud flat with some KILLDEER. We then went to the
Elkhorn Lookout observation deck (located further down
the same gravel road), where we had the good luck to
run into Jeff Wilson, who showed us some other birding
sites around the area and helped us find a VESPER
SPARROW. We finally finished up by watching the
beginning of the lunar eclipse over the lake. I ended
up with 23 life birds today, and want to thank
everyone for helping me find so many good birds. Here
is the list of notable birds from the Britton Ford
area:
EASTERN MEADOWLARK
RED PHALAROPE
GADWALL
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW
FIELD SPARROW
NORTHERN HARRIER
BLUE WINGED TEAL
GREEN WINGED TEAL
DUNLIN (seen from the observation deck, feeding on the
mud flat directly in front of the deck)
AMERICAN WIDGEON
VESPER SPARROW
GREAT HORNED OWL
COMMON LOON
