There's been a discussion about declines in nighthawk numbers on the
Bristol-Birds list serve in the last couple days. Good timing on a
sighting of a lot of nighthawks! It's almost a year to the day when I had
525+ common nighthawks circling one area between Smyrna and Murfreesboro in
Rutherford Co. Now is the time of the year to go in the last couple of
hours of daylight and look for flocks of nighthawks.

As it turns out, the Common Nighthawk is the ABA Bird of the Year (
http://aba.org/boy/). Link has info on the species, possible reasons for
the declines, etc.

Just this past week, a hawk watch in WI (maybe MN, can't remember) had over
30,000 nighthawks pass by in one day!

For what it's worth, I had 7 nighthawks over my house in Rutherford Co.
this evening, all headed more or less west.

Cheers,
Scott Somershoe
