The first spring warbler of the year made itself known this afternoon (3/20/2012) at our place in western Lewis County when a Northern Parula sang. Interestingly its first few songs were rather hesitant alternate songs, but within 15 minutes it was rendering a flawless primary song. Coming on a day with howling southerly winds blowing without interruption all the way from the Yucatan, this makes me wonder if this was a trans-gulf migrant making his first touchdown since departing Mexico sometime yesterday! I was outside most of the day and did not hear any Parula sounds earlier in the day. Also have been seeing a steady stream of northbound Purple Martins high overhead yesterday and today.
