3/24/12
It was a nice day for a drive but a lousy one to be without binoculars. Aargh!
I would really love to have gotten better looks at some of these:

An Osprey (!) overhead on Hwy 64 just west of Fayetteville (Lincoln Co). I was
surprised but certain of its identification. I was driving over a bridge, and
the maps online call it Hayes Branch, but I think the marker read Cane Creek.

All of the large road cuts between Fayetteville and Lawrenceburg (Lincoln,
Giles, Lawrence Counties) had swallows swooping around. I can't say which ones.

About 1 mile east of Frankewing (Giles County), I saw an odd dove alone on a
power line. It was very light all over and unmarked except for the tail, which
was dipped in black. I actually went back to look at this one, but without
binoculars, that's just about all I could tell. It seemed to have a shape and
size like a Eurasian Collared-dove. My guess is an oddly-colored pigeon. Any
other thoughts?

Also, last week (3/19) on my drive to Franklin, I saw a Loggerhead Shrike in
Rover, TN (Bedford County). I was driving on Hwy 41A, and I saw it just south
of the air field. I think the road that was right there was called Air Port
Loop. Anyway, always nice to see a shrike.

Here at home in Lynchburg, my mockingbirds have been doing imitations of Great
Crested Flycatchers this week, and I suspect the E. Kingbird I heard was really
a Mockingbird, too. I'm keeping an eye/ear out for the real thing!
