While out birding and BBS-ing, and hearing the periodical cicadas, I have learned a bit more about the species in this area. There are at least two Magicicada species in the current emergence in middle TN. The predominant one is M. tredecassini. This is the one with the shrill buzzy voice, often with a rising inflection. Mixed in, in several spots, I have also heard the very different call of M. tredecim. This is an eerie, hollow, throaty call that begins with a long sustained pitch, then a sharp drop to a deeper, shorter note. It is sometimes written as "Pharaoh", but with the pacing it is more like "Phaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaraohhh." Listen for it in the cicada choruses while they still continue. It seems to me that M. tredecim tends to start earlier in the morning and call later in the evening that M. tredecassini. Both are often heard together in the same chorus, however. There is a third species that might be in the mix here, but I have yet to hear it. It has a strongly rhythmic raspy/buzzy call -- Cha-bzzzzz-Cha-bzzzz-Cha-bzzzz- etc., very staccato. It would be helpful to the cicada folks to note where you find which species and report them at magicicada.org
