Hoping for loons, scoters, or other goodies with all the water freezing up north of us and here (Drakes Creek park water is frozen and the swan was not found today in Sumner county), I visited the Davidson county side of Old Hickory Dam this afternoon. None of the goodies I was hoping for, but a nice assortment.
Snow Bunting Peninsula:1600 Ring-Billed Gulls (1200 on and near Snow Bunting Peninsula, and another 400 scoped in the dam and in the water above it)
1 Herring Gull 2 Great Blue Herons Below Old Hickory Dam:120 Bonapartes Gulls, most often a few hundred yards below the dam, but sometimes as many as 50 flocking closer to the spillway
Lake above and along the dam, closer to the beach: 5 Canvasback 3 Redheads 12 Gadwall 2 Northern Shovelers 60 American Coots 6 Mallards 7 Horned Grebes 165 Canada Geese around the beach 1 imm.
