Old Hickory Dam area
Davidson Co., TN
2011 March 8
10:30-11:50 am
cloudy, warm

Jan Shaw and I decided to check on several birds reported
recently around Old Hickory Dam. The BALD EAGLE nest on
Cinder Road was unoccupied and no eagle was seen in the
area. There were also no WHITE-WINGED SCOTERs in the
dam area. Instead we were treated to 20 or more REDHEADs
plus at least one male GREATER SCAUP. Wind made for
choppy waves and a lot of the ducks were diving. Many of
the HORNED GREBEs were beginning to change into alternate
plumage. Walking the woods near the dam we found both kinglets,
a BROWN CREEPER and a non-calling RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH
plus a faintly singing HERMIT THRUSH. One or two PINE
WARBLERs also sang so briefly that we could not spot them
visually. All in all it was a nice pre lunch break before
the rains arrive.
