Old Hickory Lake Dam Area
Davidson Co., TN
2011 Feb. 27
Sunday afternoon, 1:15-2:15pm
cloudy and warm

I stopped at the parking lot for the public beach at Old Hickory
Lake near its dam. Scanning for the WHITE-WINGED SCOTER that had
been reported over the past week I found that it had multiplied.
There are now 2 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERs. While one had double
white patches on its face, one of which appeared to be near
its eye, a second bird with it had only a single very faint
white patch behind the upper part of the bill. Both preened
for a while and dove a bit, nicely showing their white wing
patchs. Close to the parking lot shore, they eventually moved
away toward Snow Bunting Peninsula, but probably were still
closer to the Public Beach area off Cinder Road when I left.

There were about 50 RUDDY DUCKs and 50 LESSER SCAUP, all relatively
near to shore. One male scaup looked different enough that I
kept coming back to it. From its head shape and size plus its
bigger bill and nail, it was a GREATER SCAUP. At times, male
LESSER SCAUP swam beside it, and I got good comparisons.

HORNED and PIED-BILLED GREBEs were around plus 3 species of gulls.
