Greene County

Today, during Greeneville's Second Annual Butterfly Count, an unusual bird species for East Tennessee was enjoyed by six regional TOS members. At Cutshaw's Bog, the last site visited during the count, an Olive-sided Flycatcher was observed clearly for over fifteen minutes with both binoculars and scope by Don Holt, Jim Holt, Alice Loftin, Don Miller, Allen Trently, and David Trently.

The bird was feeding from the top of a dead tree on the edge of the bog, sallying for insects and then returning to the same perch. While the flycatcher was perched, the group was able to observe its size, overall proportions, large head, short tail, bill color, white throat and center of breast and belly, dark breast sides and flanks, white "tufts" on the lower back, and somewhat mottled undertail coverts. In short, the bird put on a clinic, offering practically every identifying characteristic except vocalizations.

This was a splendid end to a splendid day that produced 52 species of butterfly.

(Cutshaw's Bog is located about three quarters of a mile off Greene Mountain Road on the back side of Greene Mountain. Greene Mountain Road is accessed from Viking Mountain Road, which is reached by turning off Highway 70 (Asheville Highway) about a quarter mile north of the state line. Anyone wishing to have more precise directions is welcome to e-mail me privately. I'll gladly provide more info.)
