"Another note that may be of interest to other Breeding Bird Survey
observers... this morning I wore my government-issued blaze orange safety
vest while conducting the route. And perhaps for the first time on this
route, not one single person asked me what I was doing or if I needed help.
Evidently person with orange vest and clipboard says 'on the job, please do
not disturb, I have business here.' "

So I decided to try wearing an orange safety vest for a week of roadside
birding in White County for a breeding bird foray
(http://iweb.tntech.edu/sstedman/Foray--UCR--CentralNode.htm). As Bill
noted, it worked like a charm! I especially liked wearing the vest when in
view of houses (particularly when the dogs were barking at 6:30 AM). I did
get a looking-over by other orange-vested folks, but it was easy to reply
that I was doing a bird survey.

The only downside from someone who prefers to wear subdued colors while
birding is that yesterday while phishing for sora at a tiny marsh
(marshette?), a waterthrush with what looked like a buff eyeline jumped up
into a bush. Upon seeing me, it immediately flew off and was unresponsive to
any of various recordings. I suspect that without the orange vest, I'd have
had another second in which to confirm the identity of the bird.

So, I plan on becoming an orange-vested birder. I should mention the
potential added safety of being more easily seen by drivers, though I've
always given them wide berth.
