Hi Bob & other TN-Birders, A little while ago, I had a rather unusually marked ruby-throated hummingbird here in Charlotte Park, West Nashville, Davidson County a few blocks east of the Cumberland River. When the light glinted off its throat, it gave off a sometimes orange cast and at other times, it looked as if its red feathers were tipped in gold (not yellow, but pure gold) which, at the slightest change of position, would again glint orange. Other than that, it appears to be a standard ruby-throat, but I have never had one catch the light quite like that before. This is an absolutely camera wary bird. I tried and tried to get a photo, but he was GONE every time before I could get the camera clicked. I've deleted piles of images of just the feeder. At one point, he was perched high up in a hackberry tree looking right at me with his "gold" glinting away. I stepped out onto the deck. That didn't bother him. I started to aim the camera. He moved to another spot from which his gold also glinted. As soon as I was in position, he moved back to the first spot. I got back there to take aim, and he flew in behind a leafy canopy. When he returned to the feeder later, we played the same "game," and he has won the match. There are names for little birds like him, and they are not nice names. Would you believe something like @#$%&*%$#? Oh well, I enjoyed watching the little fellow even though he exasperated the daylights out of me by posing so pretty until I was ready to fire off the shutter. Happy birding, Dee Thompson Nashville, TN
