As of yesterday, 3/22, individual ospreys were occupying at least 6 nests viewable from the road in Cocke county. Locations: one silo at Dutch Bottoms, Walters Bridge, Rankin coal tower, old Rankin Bridge, the RR microwave tower on Industrial Rd., and a tower at the CSI plant. Two other visible nest sites were unoccupied; I haven't yet checked out the seven other nests that were inhabited last year. I also saw three ospreys at some distance from any nests. To my knowledge, there were only two osprey nests in the county twelve years ago. In 2011, I observed 15, with unconfirmed reports of 2 more on the Pigeon River.
