Paris Landing State Park Henry County TN 8-27-12, morning and then again in the afternoon There were three tern species feeding at Paris Landing this morning, viewed from the picnic area. We saw Caspian Terns which were making frequent solo fly-by flights very near the water's edge, some Forster's flying here and there and perched on the occasional buoy, and a nice little flock of Black Terns which were feeding farther out over the water. Along the sandbar (which is mostly submerged), there is a large amount of some vegetation that sort of creates a mat in the water. We saw a large flock of Blue-winged Teal resting in this mat, as well as a few Pied-billed Grebes and a handfull of Double-crested Cormorants. Standing out on the submerged sandbar was an immature Little Blue Heron. The only gulls we saw today were Ring-billed, all lined up on the yellow pipe which borders the swimming area, although a few weeks ago there had been a Laughing Gull amongst them. The placement of the gulls is optimal for scanning for something unusual, as when they are on the swimming pipe they are very close by and all lined up in a convenient row! And of course, as always, there were a few Great Blue Herons in the area, including two which were on the pipe. We saw several Pine Warblers and a Prothonotary today. Last Tuesday we had seen a Black and White Warbler and a Yellow-throated Warbler in the picnic area. Yellow-throated seem to be the most common warbler we've found in the Paris Landing park, but we saw none today... although we didn't really go seeking them in their usual haunt in the heavily wooded portion of the picnic area. The park was, as usual, crawling with its ubiquitous Red-headed Woodpeckers which are numerous and as tame as park squirrels.... they will even come to food left unattended at picnic tables and will sometimes fly down to get tossed crackers. We went over the bridge to do some other things and when we came back at about 2:00, there was no sign of the Black Tern flock although the other water birds were still present. The Forster's Terns had joined the Ring-billed Gulls on the yellow pipe, looking very small next to the gulls. We saw an Osprey at both of our visits today, morning and afternoon.
