Paris Landing
Port Rd. Overlook
Trailer Rd.

Highlights:
Pacific Loon
Surf Scoter
Franklin's & Lesser Black-backed Gulls

My plans for this afternoon were changed, so I left the on a very quick trip
back to the KY Lake area with a couple of hours of daylight left. In marked
contrast to this weekend, conditions were perfect. The water was like glass
in most locations, and there was practically no atmospheric distortion.

The Paris Landing area produced no surprises, but 4 Franklin's Gulls (2 adult
& 2 1st winter) sitting on the water out from the platform was a nice treat.
There were several nice flocks of Scaup in view, with a few Ruddies and
Ring-necks mixed in, but no Scoters here. Gulls in general were all over the
area as usual, and has been the luck the past couple of times I've been
there, Bald Eagles had ownership of the island the gulls like to rest on.

Port Rd was excellent as usual, both for numbers of loons, and this time with
a Surf Scoter to boot. While there are several nice groups of Scaup in the
area, this female-type Surf was staying with a pair of Lesser Scaup at the
mouth of the bay which Port Rd. overlooks. Late this afternoon I had 168
Loons in one scan from Port Rd. and over 100 farther south from Trailer Rd.,
and of course there is a large section of the lake here that I didn't see
from either location, so the number of loons in the area would be staggering
if we really knew how many there were. I didn't have luck from Port Rd with
anything other than Common Loons, although in the gull roost I did have a
Franklin's come in (quite possibly 1 of the 4 I had previously, as I had 3
out from Trailer Rd. also) as well as a 1st year Lesser Black-backed. I
didn't see either of the adult Lesser Black-backs this afternoon. Finally,
from the Trailer Rd area, I found a small, dark, small-billed loon among a
string of Commons, but for the longest time it kept swimming away from me. It
eventually preened and turned my direction and it was the Pacific I was
hoping for. Conditions were prime for a Red-throated sighting, but once again
no luck in this area. (Now, for that Red-necked Grebe I've been looking for ?)

Good birding!!!!
