Two Peregrines were seen today (Wed. 8/21) at Rankin Bottoms, Cocke County, TN, by Larry McDaniel, Don Holt and Wallace Coffey. One of the large falcons was observed flying above the confluence of the Nolichuckey River and the French Broad River. It was soon joined by a second Peregrine and the birds soared in circles. One of the birds made several nice dives at the other. Eventually they flew towards us at a much lower level right at the abandoned railroad coal tipple. As one of the birds approached, the pale crown and the light eyebrow of the juvenile (first yar) tundra race could easily be observed. Also the brown vertical streaks of the breast were evident. Few shorebirds were present and nothing of note. The road up the flats is not yet out of the water. It may need about another few inches or a foot of drawdown to fully expose it. Let's go birding.....
