Rather colorful with the Cardinal at no extra cost! What do you think? The bird was seen at our deck feeder around 8AM. This, of course, is right at our house situated in the middle of forest but with open space of 100 or more feet from main forest canopy. There are additional trees offering canopy connections between our house and the forest. The elevation is about 3,100'. Todd Note: This message posted TN-Birds 5:19 p.m. Sat, 9 Jun 2012 07:59:36 -0400 A male Rose-breasted Grosbeak visited my feeder this morning. Didn't have the camera at hand. But I would have missed it altogether but for my wife's looking up at just the right moment. That's a first at the feeder. What a gift! Todd Eastin Shady Valley, TN ------------------------------- NOTES FROM WALLACE COFFEY SUN. 10 JUNE 2012 5:07 P.M. (1.) I am not sure if I remember seeing a photo of a male Rose-breasted Grosbeak coming to a local feeder either this far into June or in June at all. Considering Todd lives at 3,100 ft. elevation and on Iron Mountain, having this species in his yard is about 400 to 500 feet lower than what we have been finding in recent years at this season. In our book on Bird Study in Shady Valley, Tennessee 1934-1999, John Shumate and I wrote it was distributed above 3,000 feet elevation in summer. (2.) In a ms. by Rick Knight which has been submitted to THE MIGRANT, relative to the 2011 TOS Foray which was held on 10-12 June in Shady Valley, Knight wrote in the species account: "Rose-breasted Grosbeak (Pheucticus ludovicianus) Eight were found, all above 3500 ft on Iron and Holston Mountains. Wetmore (1939) reported this species from both mountains. Coffey and Shumate (1999) described it as an occasional summer resident, with only a few records in the 1960s. Eighteen were reported on the 1976 Foray." Wallace Coffey Bristol, TN
