Pickwick Lake area/ Hardin Co.
aftermath of Hurricane Katrina
The goodies have already been posted, and I'll let Jeff fill in more on the
details. Just thought I'd put out a quick post and a link to a few photos
from yesterday (better photos will likely be following from Jeff and
others).
My plan was to meet Jeff and Joe Guinn at Pickwick about 07:00. The weather
actually wasn't too bad at that time, just a drizzly rain. I stopped on the
over to look at a barrow pit just west of the Tennessee River, off of
Highway 64. This pit was full of Mallards and Canada Geese, as well as
shorebirds. Highlights here were 3 American Avocets, and singles of
Black-bellied Plover, Sanderling, and Short-billed Dowitcher. As I was
leaving here I got the call from Jeff asking where I was, and that I should
be where he is (with the Black Skimmer; didn't take long to get there).
As the day went on, the Skimmer was just the 1st of many highlights. In the
area there were at least 50 Laughing Gulls, 3 Sooty Terns, hundreds of Black
Terns, 2 Storm-Petrels (one definitely a Band-rumped), Magnificent
Frigatebird, Long-tailed Jaeger (found by Jon Dunn and Brainard
Palmer-Ball), a interesting Skua/Jaeger that is either a massive Pomarine or
only the 2nd interior record of a Catharacta Skua, American Avocets and
Black-necked Stilts on the pilings with the skimmer and gulls, and small
flights of Ruddy Turnstones and Sanderlings that were working the Dam area.
Several birders were able to enjoy most of the these birds, thought the very
high winds made it a real challenge to just observe, much less photograph
them.
I have posted 4 bad shots of a Band-rumped Storm-Petrel, Black Skimmer,
Magnificent Frigatebird, and the Pomarine Jaeger/Skua. The link is as
