The annual influx of dozens of American Goldfinches feeding in the tops of the flowering and budding trees (Black Cherry is a special favorite) started here in western Lewis County a couple of days ago. Today (3/24/2012) I managed to pick out one Pine Siskin by voice from the 60 or so Goldfinches.
Other recent arrivals have been Blue-headed Vireo and Louisiana Waterthrush yesterday (3/23/2012) and Blue-gray Gnatcatcher today. The vireo is actually not a common bird here, and I have missed it entirely in some springs. Also, though they are winter residents in the surrounding terrain, Chipping Sparrows don't usually occur on our farm until spring migration. They arrived two days ago (3/22/2012).
Interesting to note that though the local flora is running almost three weeks ahead of typical bloom and leafout dates, so far the birds are mostly arriving within a week of their usual times.
