3-14-15 Seven Points Rec Area, Percy Priest Lake. Davidson Co. The all-white gull reported by Richard Conners yesterday was re-found this morning, and it was indeed a first-cycle Iceland Gull. It was roosting on a gravel bar along with Herring and Ring-billed Gulls straight out from the boat ramp. It was intermediate in size between the Herring and Ringers, with an all-black bill (thus eliminating Glaucous), It also stretched its wings several times revealing the clean all-white wing pattern unlike the "piano-key" pattern of Thayers. The gravel bar is a good ways out in the water and a scope is pretty much essential. Also present were 30 Red-breasted Mergansers, virtually all of which were males. A distant raft of about 70 scaup contained at least 9 Greaters. Unfortunately, after observing the gull for about 30 minutes, a boat came by and flushed all of the gulls and the Iceland flew off to the south along with most of the other gulls. They disappeared over the treeline to the south heading in the general direction of the landfill, so perhaps it's been moving back and forth to the lake recently.
