This will be my last daily up-date on the Pewee unless it leaves or someone
hears and hopefully records its song to determine for sure which Pewee it is
(although we think it is an Eastern Wood-Pewee). I will continue to post 1-2
times a week depending if any change or a new interesting observation.
I played the song of both the Western & Eastern Wood-Pewee today. It seemed to
pay no attention to the song of the Western nor of the first song I played of
the Eastern. However, when I played the second song of the Eastern (on the
newest Audubon app) it flew to the other bridge a 100 yards away. It uses that
bridge more than the small bridge so I do not know if my playing the song had
anything to do with it moving to the other bridge or not.
It does seem to have made a winter home for awhile. I saw it at 2:00 and 5:00
today always on one of the two bridges. It seems to be able to find plenty of
food as it goes up in the air frequently and returns to a post on the bridge.
As I said yesterday I think this bird has been here since Nov. 16. I do wonder
what it will do if we get a week of really cold temperatures sometime in
January like we usually get. I would think there would not be enough flying
insects to sustain it. Sometimes a Phoebe also shares the bridge although I
have never seem them close to each other.
Assuming it stays around, if anyone wants to see it I can probably do most days
between now and Jan. 12. It has been easy to find the last 3 days. After Jan.
12, I will be gone until Jan. 26.
