I had the first Purple Martins of the season today in my yard. Two males were
seen soaring & flying high up above the gourd racks in the yard. Always nice to
hear their bubbling notes after a long absence.

I forgot to post that a week ago, on February 27, I was out in the yard right
after dark and had a calling Sandhill Crane fly right over the yard! This is
the 2nd time I've encountered this species at home and the first was just a few
weeks ago in January.

My dad called this evening to report a "mystery" bird to me. He said they were
back in the field working on a terrace on the farm and kept flushing a fairly
large "shorebird". He's not a birder at all but he described it as larger than
a Killdeer and whitish with a fairly small head. Sounds like an Upland
Sandpiper by the description but I'm going to try to check it out tomorrow to
see if the bird is still there. Who knows?

Good birding,
