We did some birding today in the Rankin area while leading a Sierra Club group
on a canoe tour. Shorebird numbers are increasing, but the the lake is still
too high (986+) for birding from the shore; Labor Day weekend should be better
for dry-land birding. Dowitchers and pectoral sandpipers are now present,
peeps are increasing. We didn't notice any Eastern Kingbirds, but we finally
got a good look at a willow flycatcher. Most notably seen:
80+ peeps, mostly least sandpipers, with fewer western and semipalmated
8 pectoral sandpipers
2 short-billed dowitchers & 1 ? dowitcher spp
13 lesser yellowlegs
3 semipalmated plovers
100+ killdeer
2 solitary sandpipers
1 Caspian tern
1 lonely redwinged blackbird
80+ great egrets
28 green herons, at least 10 immature
21 black-crowned night herons, 6 immature
7 ospreys
50+ double-crested cormorants
3 prothonotary warblers
2 yellow-billed cuckoos
1 willow flycatcher
1 red tailed hawk
