Rankin Bottoms, Cocke county, 4/6/2011, 4-6 PM, by car Douglas Lake elevation: 978.4 Mike Roussin's report on Bristol-birds of 25 eagles on 4/5 at Rankin Bottoms prompted me to drive over for a look. The lake has risen to the vicinity of the coal chute, but the road along the bottoms is still above water. I saw only 5 eagles; the bird inventory was typical for early April at Rankin. Canada goose (55) Wood duck (14) Am. black duck Mallard (8) Blue-winged teal (48) Green-winged teal (10) Double-crested cormorant (15) Great blue heron (18) -at least 5 of 7 nests occupied, south of Rankin Bridge Great egret (6-FOY) Black vulture (14) Osprey (7) -3 nests occupied, coal chute & 2 north of Rankin Bridge Bald eagle (5 - 1 adult, 4 juv.)
