We put in our canoe at the Leadvale ramp, and went across to Rankin Bottoms in
Cocke County. There's very limited shorebird habitat at the current lake
level; we saw one Killdeer. We backtracked to the trestle and went west to the
Ten Islands area, where we found a fair number of shorebirds along a cove
curving along the northwest corner: nine species, including 2 Golden Plovers
and a Wilson's Phalarope. We also saw our first Green-winged Teal of the
season; about 40 Black-Crowned Night-Herons flying out of their roost south of
the RR trestle, and an enormous flock of Double-crested Cormorants on the water.
There's no road access for shoreline viewing at the north end of Ten Islands.
It's possible to hike in from trailhead on Brown Hollow Road.
