Ccoke and Hamblen counties, 4/21/11, 4-8PM, by canoe Douglas Lake elevation: 988 ft. We covered about 7 miles of Rankin Bottoms and the mouth of the Nolichucky on this trip and encountered at least 20 bald eagles, following up on Mike Roussin's report of 25 on April 6. RANKIN BOTTOMS, Cocke county, highlights: Wood duck (18, plus 15 tiny ducklings) Am. widgeon (1 drake) Blue-winged teal (42) Northern shoveler (1 drake) Green-winged teal (6) Pied-billed grebe Double-crested cormorant (45) Great blue heron (24 - 3 nests under construction across from MdCowan Creek) Great egret (5) Black-crowned night-heron - FOY Osprey (5) Bald eagle (13 - 2 adult) Am. coot (12) Killdeer (3) Greater yellowlegs (3) Lesser yellowlegs Caspian tern (5 - FOY) Prothonotary warbler (3-FOY) Common yellowthroat - FOY MOUTH OF THE NOLICHUCKY, the east bank is in Cocke county, the west bank and the islands (which are part of the Rankin WMA) are in Hamblen county, The east side is sheer rock, with a spectacular display of wildflowers and clinging cedars. Other than the spotted sandpipers, all of the shorebirds we saw were in shallow inlets along the west bank.
