On the evening of 8/20, we spotted four active double-crested cormorant nests
in a rookery in a row of cottonwoods along the west side of the river about 1/4
mile downstream from the old Rankin Bridge in Cocke County. The grunting of
the adults and squealing of the nestlings made it sound more than an African
watering hole than a Tennessee riverbank.
The first mudflats are emerging in across the river from the nests and above
the TWRA gate on the old RR bed at Rankin Bottoms. These areas are only
accessible in a boat. The only shorebirds we saw were a lesser yellowlegs, a
spotted sandpiper, and several killdeer. Waders were more numerous: 60+ great
egrets, 20+ great blue herons, 16 black crowned night herons, 1 snowy egret, 2
little blue herons (1 adult, 1 immature), and 3 cattle egrets. There were also
2 bald eagles in the area, 1 with adult plumage, numerous mallards and wood
ducks, a small flock of eastern kingbirds, and a pair of willow flycatchers.
