August 13, 2005 Dacus Bar across from Mud Island Memphis, Shelby Co. TN An early morning trip by the Mississippi River front produced 5 Black Terns, 1 Caspian Tern, the usual bunch of Black-necked Stilts and other mud runners on Dacus Bar. Both the American Queen and the Mississippi Queen cruise ships are tied up on the upper end of Mud Island taking on passengers. I came back after 2 PM and discovered 66 Black Terns, NINE RED KNOTS, Black-necked Stilts with an AVOCET in their midst, 4 Forster's Terns, lots of Least Terns and an immature Common Tern for a 5 tern species day. The 9 Red Knots flew in around 2:30 and bathed along with some Lesser Yellowlegs and Pectoral Sandpipers. This group was flushed by a couple of ski-dos; they flew south, under the bridge and later 2 more appeared near the roosting Black Terns for a high total of 11 for the day. Good Birding!!! Jeff R.
