[TN-Bird] Red trifecta at Beaman Park (Davidson Co.)

I happened to glance outside the window here at the nature center just now and
saw a female Summer Tanager pulling some fibrous material from one of the
bushes in our native plant garden for nest building. She was joined by a male
Summer Tanager, who was apparently supervising things as she continued tugging
away. Seconds later a male Scarlet Tanager landed right next to them to see
what was going on, and then a male Cardinal left the feeder to take a look as
well. I think it's safe to say that's the first time I've seen all three red
species within four or five feet of each other. What a photo that would've been!

Speaking of Cardinals, I was doing a little work in the bee yard yesterday and
I heard a pair raising a ruckus about something. I went over to the bush that
was the source of all the excitement and saw a male and female giving grief to
a snake (I couldn't tell what kind it was). The Cardinals prevailed with a few
well-placed pecks and the snake dropped from the bush and slithered away, tail
between his vestigial proverbial legs, as the birds kept watching from above
until he could be seen no more. I was able to watch this at relatively close
range; I've noticed that with my bee veil on birds don't quite perceive me as
human. A number of times I've had different species land fairly close to me and
go about their business as if I weren't there.
