Yesterday, Graham Gerdeman reported the presence of a red-throated loon at
Percy Priest Dam. This morning between 9 and 11 am the red-throated loon was
still present and swimming in the cove surrounded by Percy Priest Dam,
Nashville Shores theme park, and a boat dock. The bird was visible from the
high parking lot on the east side of the dam, but I walked down the steps from
the parking lot to the lake for a closer view. ID could be confusing due to the
presence of two common loons in the cove, but the more slender body and
thinner, upward curving bill of the red-throated loon are diagnostic. At 11 am
the loon swam southward and disappeared.
