While driving in the northwest of Sevier County today, I found a family of Red-headed Woodpeckers, 2 adults, 2 juveniles at the corner of Pine Ridge Road and Porterfield Gap Road. In the SE corner of that intersection is stand of oak trees and the birds were in there, and visiting a dead snag with lots of cavity holes in it in the adjacent field. This makes the third family group I've seen in the county in the last year; maybe it's just a reflection of just getting out more, but seems to me, along with other incidental records of RHWO around the county recently that this bird may becoming more widespread.
