December 7, 2011 Reelfoot Lake area, Lake & Obion Counties I spent a couple of hours yesterday aftternoon birding around Reelfoot Lake. As Mike mentioned there were lots of hawks around and lots of gulls in the flooded fields. I picked up a few calling Lapland Longspurs on Van Works Road. I also had a small flock of Brewer's Blackbirds just east of the State Park campground in Obion County. There was a single Redhead with Ring-necked Ducks on the lagoon near the Airpark campground. After Mike told me where he had seen the adult Little Gull, I headed to Keystone Pocket and within 5 minutes had picked up the bird. It was on the move constantly but as Mike mentioned the combination of black underwings, lack of white flash on the upperwing, and the very graceful, bouyant flight made the bird easy to pick out amongst the hordes of Bonaparte's Gulls. After several minutes of searching I finally picked out the Surf Scoter that Mike had seen just as the bird woke up for a few minutes and then went back to sleep. A single American White Pelican was seen sleeping on a stump beside a cormorant. Also in this area were lots of Buffleheads and Ruddy Ducks and a couple of Horned Grebes. Hopefully some of the goodies will hang around for the Reelfoot CBC next Saturday! Good birding, Mark Greene Trenton, TN Gibson County
