The Chattanooga CBC was held on December 20. Despite very cold morning temperatures, 24 participants were in the field. The species count was an excellant 106! The highest in many years and close to the all time high of 109. Highlights included: - 6 female LONG-TAILED DUCKS- These birds were seen among large rafts of migrating waterfowl out from Bal Harbor Road, which is one of the neighborhoods on the south side of the Chickamauga Lake between Chickamauga Dam and Booker T Washington State Park. The birds were not relocated the next day. - 1 SEDGE WREN at the Brainerd Levee - 5 VIRGINIA RAILS at Standifer Gap Marsh - 2 Orange Crowned Warblers at separate locations - 14 Purple Finchs at two separate locations - 2 House Wrens - A male RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD at an disclosed location in the count circle, plus another undisclosed Selasphorus on Missionary Ridge and another Selasphorus on Signal Mountain. - Over 400 Sandhill Cranes - 2 Peregrine Falcons below Chickamauga Dam Misses: - No Herring Gull - No Barred Owl I want to thank all of the count participants who did a fantastic job!!! One COMMON MERGANSER was reported at Pinky's Point, (near Chester Frost Park, on the north side of Chickamauga Lake) on the TOS fieldtrip on December 23. (Harold Birch) 25 Red-breasted Mergansers were in the same area where the Long-tailed Ducks were seen (December 20) on Lake Chickamauga on December 21.
