The Chattanooga CBC (December 18) started with temperatures in the high 20's and finished with a beautiful, sunny 54 degrees. Twenty-four participants found 100 species (just about average species count). Some of the highlights included: Bald Eagle - One adult and one immature. Peregrine Falcon - Both adults were below Chickamauga Dam Northern Bobwhite - A covey at Enterprise South, can be tough to find during the winter. (Dan Williams and Libby Wolfe) Sandhill Crane - A flock over Enterprise South were all that were found for the day. (Dan Williams and Libby Wolfe) Virginia Rail - Eight were heard and seen at Standifer Gap Marsh by David and Roger Patterson. American Woodcock - Bill Haley heard one "peent" at Moccasin Bend. Herring Gull - One was seen by Judy Newsome on the Tennessee River. Rufous Hummingbird - The adult female banded by Chris Sloan on December 4 was still present at Dan William's residence on Signal Mountain. House Wren - Two were found on William's Island by Dave Vogt and one at Baylor by Bill Haley. Marsh Wren - One was found by David Patterson at Standifer Gap Marsh. Sedge Wren - One was found by David Patterson at Standifer Gap Marsh. Red-breasted Nuthatch - One seen at Jonnie Sue Lyons' residence on Signal Mountain was the only one for the count. Orange-crowned Warbler - One was seen well by Bill Haley at Baylor School. Almost an annual on this count. Vesper Sparrow - One was seen at the Brainerd Levee by David Aborn and Mike McMahan. Pine Siskin - Jonnie Sue Lyons found 4 on Signal Mountain. Misses: American Wigeon Greater Scaup - Do not seem to be in our area yet. Northern Harrier - Never easy Barred Owl American Pipit - Usually around somewhere. Purple Finch - Seen on count day at more than one feeder nearby, but outside the count circle.
