Hi Folks I've been banding Ruby-throats since 2006 both at home and with various projects in the Knoxville area. So far I've banded 1,853 birds. I also band wintering hummers in the east Tennessee area and I think I'm up to about 36 so far. This spring I got my first Ruby-throats returning on Sunday April 10 which is about when several others posted that they had their first birds. I have always found it difficult to catch birds in the spring but last night I decided to try and caught a beautiful male. It turns out I banded him on August 6, 2010 as a youngster. He had one gorget feather at the time and weighed 2.9 grams. Yesterday he was in full adult plumage of course and weighed 2.8 grams. I do have other Ruby-throats around and I'll see if there are other familiar faces that from past years. No telling if he will stay or move on but I think it is pretty interesting to know that one youngster has returned.
