Boyd Sharp, Gail Clendenen and I saw three Brown-headed Nuthatches at 5:15 p.m. today at the swamp next to the Hwy 58 bridge in NE Roane County. Driving from I-40 toward Oak Ridge on Hwy. 58, cross the bridge over the river and take the first left. The ramp goes down to a road that I think is Bear Creek Road, but there is no sign there. Turn right and park near a gate on the left. The birds were about 30 yards beyond the gate at the side of the road. Then we went to Kingston Steam Plant and saw one Willet at the biggest pond. There was not an abundance of other birds. From I-40 West, take Exit 350, make three left turns and go north back under the interstate. Drive until you see ball fields on the right. Park at the far end of the graveled parking lot and walk to the pond. If anyone has reliable current locations for Willow Flycatcher and/or Redheaded Woodpecker within a couple of counties' distance of Knox County, we would appreciate leaning about them.
