18 December 2003
Jim Kirk Road, Greene Co., TN

At a little before noon today, and again at around 1:00, I observed
three white phase Ross's Geese in the cornfield at the end of Jim Kirk
Road, about a quarter mile from its intersection with Mohawk Creek Road
and North Mohawk Road. (North Mohawk Road is located on Highway 11-E
about a half mile east of exit 23 off I-81 in Greene County. The Mohawk
Creek Road / Jim Kirk Road intersection is about a mile or so down North
Mohawk Road from 11-E.)

I was able to view the birds well with a scope and binoculars for
lengthy periods of time and clearly observed the following:

bill size, shape, and color;
head shape and size;
neck length;
overall size and plumage;
flight pattern.

The birds appeared to be juveniles moving into adult plumage. They
showed white body and wing plumage combined with a bit of gray on the
head and neck and a trace of dark coloration in the lores area
progressing through the eye. The bill color was pink with grayish at
the base. The bill shape was basically triangular, and there was no
obvious "grin patch."

The birds flushed from time to time as airplanes and other disturbances
appeared, but they always returned to the same area. They may also be
using other fields in the immediate area.

The geese were also observed by Jim Holt and Alice Loftin.

I believe this to be the first confirmation of this species in Greene
County.

Don Miller,
Greeneville, TN
